Upon filing a claim for foundation damage, your carrier will generally hire a plumbing company to inspect the plumbing system to determine whether there is a drain or supply line leak in the plumbing system. If a leak is detected, the plumbing company should attempt to determine the location of the leak or leaks. When a leak is present, the insurance company will usually next hire a professional engineer to give an opinion as to whether the identified leak(s) caused the foundation to move, thereby resulting in damage to the insured’s property. If the engineer concludes that the plumbing leak did not damage the property but that some other cause is responsible for the reported damages—such as trees, negative drainage, seasonal moisture variations, etc.—the insured’s claim will likely be denied and no payment will be made.
